Round character
Highly developed character with many traits
Character
Individual who participate in action of literary work
Flat character
A character that has few traits not really developed
Static character
One who remains the same throughout the story
Dynamic character
One who changes throughout the story
Indirect characterization
Writer makes direct comments about characters personality or nature threw voice. The writer may describe the characters physical appearance. The writer may present the characters own thoughts, speech, and actions.
Direct characterization
The writer tells you exactly what the character is like.
Theme
Underlined message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader. Usually not stated but must be inferred.
Protagonist
Main character in the work of literature who is involved in the central conflict
Antagonist
Principle character force in opposition to a protagonist
Allusion
An indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work
Diction
Writer or speakers choice of words and way of arranging the words in sentence.
Plot
The sequence of events in a story
Setting
Time in place of the action of work.
Foil
A character who provides a striking contrast to another character
Foreshadowing
Writers use hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later.
Tone
The attitude a writer takes toward a subject.
Rising action
Conflict develops the story built to the climax
Climax
Point of maximum interest. Usually the turning point in the story
Falling action
Events that follow the climax and shows the results of the climax
Resolution
How the story ends
Suspense
The feeling readers have finding out what’s next
Hyperbole
An Exaggeration
Paradox
Seeming contradicting stamens of truth
Symbol
Person, place or activity that stand about itself
Alliteration
Repetition of sound at beginning of words

Repetition of valse(aeiou) sounds
Internal conflict
One that occurs in a character
External conflict
Character is in conflict with outside force
