Round character
Highly developed character with many traits.
Character
Individuals who participate in a literary work.
Flat character
Character that exhibits few traits and not well developed. We know very little about them
Static character
One who remains the same thought the story.
Dynamic character
Character who changes throughout the story
Indirect characterization
Author may describe the characters physical appearance . Thought speech and actions of other characteristics. May present the characters own thoughts speech and actions
Direct characterization
Author tells you exactly what that character is like
Theme
Underlying message about life or human nature. That the writer shares with the reader
Usually not stated directly but must be inferred.
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature. Who is involved in the central conflict.
Antagonist
Antagonist is the principle character or force in opposite to a protagonist.
Allusion
An indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work.
Diction
Writer or speakers choice of words and way of arranging the words in a sentence.
Plot
Sequence of events in a story.
Setting
Time and place of action in the work.
Foil
A character who provides a striking contrast to another character
Foreshadowing
Writers use of hints or clues of an event that will occur later in the story.
Tone
Attitude of the writer takes towards a subject
First person point of view
Narrator is one of the characters and we as the reader know what they know.
Third person omniscient
We know the thoughts and feelings of all the characters. Outside narrator
Third person limited
You only know what one character knows. Outside narrator
Irony
What actually happens is not what was expected.
Verbal irony
The speaker says one thing but means another.
Dramatic irony
When the reader knows something but the character does not know
Flashback
When a author interrupts the story to go back to a previous time.
Imagery
Language that appeals to the senses.
Sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch
Metaphor
A comparison of two unlike things that does not use like or as.
Simile
A comparison of two unlike things using like or as
Rising action
Conflict is building up to the climax of the story
Complications arise.
Climax
The point of maximum interest. Usually a turn of events.
Falling action
The events the follow the climax. And shows the results of what happened at the climax.
Resolution
How the story ends.
Suspense
The uncertainty or anxiety we feel as we wait to find out what’s going to happen next.
Hyperbole
An exaggerate
Paradox
A seemingly contradictory or absurd statement that may nonetheless suggest an important truth
Symbol
A person place or thing that stands for something beyond itself.
Alliteration
A religion of sounds at the beginning of the word
Assen
The repetition of vowel sounds
Onomatopoeia
Words that sound echo their meaning.
Internal conflict
One that occurs within the character
External character
Character is in a conflict with an outside force
