Round character
Complex; highly developed and has many traits
Character
The individuals who participates in the action of a literary work
Flat character
Not highly developed, few traits, know little about them.
Dynamic character
One who changes throughout the story
Static character
One who remains the same throughout the story
Direct characterization
The author directly tells you what that person is like
Indirect characterization
Find out about the character through physical appearance, their thoughts, words, or actions, and through what others say about them
Internal Conflict
One that occurs within a character
External conflict
Conflict with outside force, such as nature, a physical obstacle, or another character
Plot
The sequence of events in story
Setting
Time and place of an action in a work
Theme
An underlying message about life or human nature that a writer wants the reader to understand.
**not stated directly but must be inferred
Allusion
An indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work.
Diction
Writer or speakers choice of words and way of arranging the words of in a sentence.
Foreshadowing
Writers use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in the story
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature, who is involved in the central conflict of the story
Antagonist
Principle character or force of opposition to a protagonist or main character.
Tone
The attitude the writer takes toward a subject
Foil
A character who provides a striking contrast to another character
