Round character
Highly developed character with many traits
Character
Individuals who participate in the action of the literary work.
Flat character
Character that exhibits few traits and is not well developed
Static character
One who remains the same throughout the story
Dynamic character
Changes throughout the story
Indirect characterization
When an author indirectly tells you about them. Describing physical appearance and presents characters thoughts speech and actions. And through the thoughts speech and actions of other characters.
Direct characterization
Writer tells you exactly what the character is like
Theme
Underlined message about life or human feature that the writer shares with the reader
Usually not directly stated but inferred
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature who is involved in the central conflict
Antagonist
Is the principle character in force against the protagonist
Allusion
Indirect reference to a famous person, place, event or literary work
Diction
Writer or speakers choice of words and way of arranging the words in sentences
Plot
The sequence of events in the story
Setting
Time and place of the action of the work
Foil
Is a character who provides a striking contrast to another character
Foreshadowing
Writer use of hints or clues that will to suggests events later in the story
Tone
The attitude the writer take towards a subject
First person point of view
Narrator as one of the characters we know what they know
Third person omniscient
All-knowing point of view. Know all thoughts of all of the characters

Know what only what one character knows and feels

Situationally Irony
What happens is the opposite of what is expected
Verbal irony
Speaker says one thing but means another
Dramatic irony
When the reader knows something important the character doesn’t know
Flashback
When the author interrupts the story to present events that occurred at a different time
