Round character
Highly developed character with many traits
Character
Individuals who participate in the action of the literary work
Flat character
Who exhibits few traits and is not very developed. Know very little about them
Static character
One who remains the same throughout the story
Dynamic character
Changes throughout the story
Indirect characterization
Author describing characters physical appearance, presents the characters own thoughts, speech, and action, may present pertinent thoughts, speech, and action of other characters
Direct characterization
Writer tells you exactly what that character is like
Theme
Underlying message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader
Usually not directly stated but must be inferred
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature who is involved in the central conflict
Antagonist
Principal character or force in opposition to a protagonist
Allusion
Indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work
Diction
Writers or speakers choice of words and way of arranging the words in sentences called diction
Plot
Sequence of events in a story
Setting
Time and place of the action on the work
Foil
Character who provides a striking contrast to another character
