Appositives
o A noun or noun phrase that renames or identifies another noun
o Cannot contain a verb
Prepositions
o A preposition is a word that names the relationship between a noun and another word in the sentence
o A prepositional phrase is a prep., plus its object, and any modifiers
o An adjective prep. Phrase modifies a noun
o An adv. prep. phrase modifies a verb
Participial
o A verb that functions as an adjective (modifies a noun or pronoun)
o Cannot be the predicate verb of the sentence
o Can you take it out? If not, it’s the predicate verb, not a participial
Gerunds
o A gerund is a verb form functioning as a noun
o Gerund always end in -ing
o A gerund phrase is the gerund plus any modifiers (adverbs) or complements
o Subject- names who or what the sentence is about
o Predicate nominative- follows a linking verb and renames the subject
o Direct object- names who or what receives the action of an action verb
o Object of a preposition- follows the preposition and names the object
Infinitives
o An infinitive is a verb form beginning with “to” followed by a verb, plus any modifiers and compliments
o It can function as a noun, adjective, or adverb
