What does Candy’s dog and Candy himself symbolise?
They both symbolise lonliness. They have been working at the ranch for the longest out of all of the ranch workers there. The way they are presented is very poorly. In the story it is told that Slim had to drown some of his puppies since he cant afford to look after so many, this is like Candy and he and his dog have been through a lot. At that time, it was hard to gain money and Candy didn’t had enough to look after him and his dog. They both stand out since they are the oldest and weakest. Candy was represented as an old man who had no true friends except for his dog.
