Part 1 of slide 4

  • An important question to ask ourselves is, What is the covid-19 vaccine? and how does it work?”
  • When a germs, such as the virus like covid, enters our bodies, it multiplies and attacks our system. Our bodies have several ways of combating illnesses. Our white blood cells are heavily involved in ridding the body of the infection. If a person got covid, it could take a while for the body to fully heal itself from the virus. However, after that the body will keep a memory of the virus for future reference.

Part 2 of slide 4 (mRNA)

  • there are three main types of covid 19 vaccines approved
  • mRNA: in simple terms, this version contains material from the virus itself that gives instructions to our cells to create harmless proteins that is unique to the virus. Our body then will realize that those proteins do not belong their and will build T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes that will remember how to fight the virus if the body were to get it in the future.

Next is
- protein subunit vaccines: it has harmless proteins that the virus has instead of using the entire germ. Similar to the mRNA, the body will realize that the protein doesn’t belong there and build T-lymphocytes (antibodies) which, again, will remember how to eradicate the virus in the future.

Lastly
- Vector vaccines: it contains a modified type of a different virus that doesn’t cause covid. Inside the modified virus, there is substance of covid 19 which is called “viral vector”. And then like the other two versions, it creates protein that our bodies recognize as foreign, ad will remember for future purposes.

What you need to know about the vaccines and covid according to the CDC

  • Covid 19 vaccines are safe and effective
  • Side effects are normal after vaccinations
  • If you are not vaccinated, continue to take precautionary measures. For example, wearing your mask correctly, over the nose, and not like a chin strap like the majority of the band percussion at easchester highschool does.
  • ## If vaccinated, you an continue to do your regular activities, however, whilst indoors/public setting masks should be continuesly worn

  • Important tool to stop the pandemic
  • Protects people ages 5 and up
  • To become the most protective, get the recommended amount of doses
  • Vaccinated people will still get sick, vaccines are not 100% effective (be careful!)

The covid - 19 vaccine has been one of the biggest controversies/topics this past year

-It seems to me as if the country is split up in to two opposite view points

Whether or not the vaccine should become mandated

-It has become a debate in politics
This debacle has given people more opportunities to spread false information on the internet in hopes of convincing people to not get the vaccine.

Here is an example of a very influential politician tweeting about the vaccine. I hope we all know that this is our former president, Donald Trump. Despite this tweet being from 2020, the negative connotation he is associated the covid vaccine with helped many people form an untrue opinion.
read the quote
There is a reason why he got banned off of all social medias. He is also a prime example of why people should never ever idolize politicians.

To summarize what we have discussed so far

  • THE VACCINE IS EFFECTIVE, no doubt about it
  • Even if you do get the vaccine, you are not exempted from getting the virus. It is merely a shield protecting you from the worst the virus has to offer.
  • It not only protects you, it protects the people around us
  • Remember in elementary school, our teachers would ingrain corny sayings into our heads. “Treat others the way you would want to be treated” or “There is no I in Team”
  • These can 100% be applied here. This is no longer a decision for myself or yourself. We have to take other peoples lives into consideration.
  • Its scary to think about but your actions could now have severe, undo-able consequences on your life and or another persons. Take that into consideration.

Slides 7 & 8
Covid has effected everyone’s life someway somehow…theres no doubt about it.
To demonstrate this, I am going to ask a few question to the you guys, feel free to participate if you want :)

  • Has Covid impacted your education?
  • Has Covid prohibited you from seeing your friends ans family at some point?
  • Has wearing a mask ever bothered you?
  • Does anyone remember how life used to be without covid?

These are just a few of many questions I ask myself every day. All of our experiences are different, but as a community we can relate to some together.

Covid, and the self isolation that quarantining is, has had very negative effects to my mental health and my physical health.

I am the oldest of two daughters. Both of my parents are immigrants from Germany (dad) and Lebanon (mom). They are my only family in the United States, besides my ten year old sister.

Everyday, I have to live with the fear of something happening to them and being left with no one. Unlike many american families who have their entire family living within a reasonable distance from one another. My closest relatives live 440 miles away, or in Lebanon.

I hope that if the vaccine becomes mandated across the United States, a little weight will be lifted off my shoulders. No child should live with the fear of losing their parents, so neither should I.

Here is a graphic from “Tribune Content Agency”.

  • They picked a bunch of people randomly from everywhere in the United States and asked them all the same question “Would you take an FDA-approved vaccine?”
  • As a fun activity, I have made an addition to this survey. I printed out a google form for everyone and if you want to participate in the hypothetical scenario, you may. I am going to need a volunteer to hand it out please. I will collect the surveys at the end of my speech.
  • I believe the survey was conducted some time early 2021, late 2020.
  • When I look at this data, nothing shocks me.
  • 65% of Americans voted yes
  • The only group that voted no as the majority was the Republican group. I believe that they are the hardest people to convince to get the vaccine. Like I touched upon before, there are several politicians who go against the CDC and spread misleading information, which could be the reason republicans are so hesitant.

One of the most common concerns of people that refuse the idea of getting the vaccine mandated across the United States is…
- The loss of personal freedoms

So yeah the vaccine is a personal medical decision. There is a reason why the school isn’t allowed to ask students their covid 19 vaccination status.

However, I believe that there are certain cases where the government is allowed to step in and make these decisions.

In this circumstance, we are dealing with a very very deadly virus. One that has costed us millions of lives worldwide and hundreds of thousands in the united states (805K). This is no longer a personal choice.

One quote that really inspired me to pursue this topic was a quote from Dr. Tedros, a medical scholar and diplomat with first hand experience in research and operations.

“This is a time for facts, not fear. This is a time for rationality, not rumors. This is a time for solidarity, not stigma.”

I got my covid 19 vaccine at the westchester county center.

One of the many vaccine cites near us.
The organization was perfect, and very covid safe, with adequate social distancing at all time.

At the end of the day, we all want the same thing…

To get over this virus, to return to what life used to be like pre covid.

Getting the vaccine mandated in the US is a big leap into that end goal.

Thank you guys, any questions?
