Round character
A highly developed character with many traits
Character
Individuals who participate in the action of a literary work
Flat character
Character that had few traits, not developed, and we know very little about them
Static character
One who remains the same throughout a story
Dynamic character
One who changes throughout the story
Direct characterization
When the writer tells you exactly what a character is like
Indirect characterization
Learn about characters indirectly. What others say about them, what the character says, physical appearance, what the character does
Internal conflict
Conflict that occurs within a character
External conflict
Character in conflict with an outside force, such as nature, physical obstacle, or another character
Plot
Sequence of events in a story
Setting
Time and place of the action in a work of literature
Theme
Underlying message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader. Typically this is not stated directly but it must be inferred
Allusion
An indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work
Diction
Writers or speakers choice of words and way of arranging the words into sentences
Foreshadowing
Writers use of hints to suggest events that will occur later in the story
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature who is involved in the central conflict
