Round Character
Well developed character
Character
Individuals who participate in the action of a literary work
Flat character
A character that exhibits few traits. Not much known about them
Static Character
A character who stays the same throughout the story
Direct characterization
Narrator tell directly how someone is like
Dynamic character
A character who has changed through out the story
Indirect characterization
The characters traits are shown by actions, words, and appearence
Internal conflict
Conflict between charachters.
External conflict
Conflict with outside force, nature or character
Plot
Sequence of events in a story
Setting
Time and place in the action in a work of literature or media
Theme
Underlying message about life or human nature, that e writer shares with the reader. Not stated directly but inferred.
Allusion
Indirect reference to a famous person place event or literary work
Diction
A writers choice of words in a Sentence or work of literature.
Foreshadowing
The writers use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in have story.
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature who’s involved in the central conflict.
Antagonist
Principle character or force in opposition to the protagonist.
Tone
The attitude a writer takes toward a subject
Foil
Charachter who provides a striking contrast to another character
First Person POV
The narrator is a person in the story and only know what he knows.
Third-person omniscient POV
All knowing narrator. Know all the characters thoughts and feelings.
Third limited POV
Narrator is not a person in the story. Only know what one person knows.
Verbal Irony
When a speaker means one thing but means another
Situational irony
What actually happens is opposite of what is expected
Dramatic irony
When the audience or reader knows something important that the Character doesn’t know
Climax
Point of maximum interest or tension
Resolution
How the story ends
Symbol
A person place, object, or activity that stands for something beyond itself
Flashback
When the authors interrupts the story to present events which occurred at a different time
Imagery
Language that appeals to the sense. Sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell.
Simile
A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things using the word like or as
Metaphor
Figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things using the word like or as.
Paradox
Seemingly contradictory or absurd statement that mights suggest an important truth
Suspense
Uncertainty or anxiety we feel about what’s going to happen next in the story
Hyperbole
Exaggeration
Rising action
Conflict develops, story builds up to climax, complications arise.
Falling action
After the climax. Shows the aftermath of an important decision or action that happened during climax.
Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds throughout the book.
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds through out the book
Onomatopoeia
Use of words whose sounds echo their meaning. Ex: pop bam wham
Mood
Atmosphere the writer creates for a reader
Personification
When human like qualities are given to an object animal or idea.
