What is a simile
A type of figurative language that compares 2 different things using words like “like” or “as”
What is a blank verse?
A verse that doesn’t rhyme
What is foreshadowing?
A warning or indication of a future event
What are the three phases to great stories in mythology, according to Joseph Campbell.
Seperation, Initiation, Return.
What is a rounded character?
A character with depth or a complex personality, Relatably flawed and fully developed thoughts, hopes, and goals.
What is a flat character?
Uncomplicated characters. Flaws (if there are any) wont be addressed in the story. Helps to move the plot along but the audience doesn’t learn much about them
What is a dramatic foil?
A character that has qualities that are in sharp contrast to another character
If the narrator uses “I” what type of narration is it?
First person narration
If the character telling the story is not the main character but is a participant in the story, what type of narration is it
First person participant
If the story is told by a narrator that can see into the thoughts of the characters, what type of narration is it?
Third person omniscient
Describe third person limited narration
Narration by a narrator that can’t see into the thoughts and emotions of other characters
What’s the first element of plot structure
Exposition: Setting and characters are introduced
What is the second element of plot structure?
Rising action: Series of events where the plot begins to build. Creates suspense, interest, and tension in the plot
What is the third element of plot structure
Climax: Point of highest dramatic tension or a major turning point in the action. (Usually the protagonist must make a critical decision that affects the future)
What is the fourth element of plot structure
Falling action: the tention decreases
