Engineering Tools Flashcards
Anti-Grav
An anti-grav is any device capable of nullifying the force of gravity, usually to lift loads of an extremely high mass. Anti-grav devices were in use primarily during the 23rd century.
At various times these devices were used to transport Nomad, to handle an antimatter bomb, and later to carry the Medusan Ambassador Kollos around the USS Enterprise. (TOS: “The Changeling”, “Obsession”, “Is There in Truth No Beauty?”) The unit Captain Kirk and Ensign Garrovick used to transport the antimatter bomb was marked ANTI-GRAV 57,000 Gkg. (TOS: “Obsession”)
By the 24th century, these devices were upgraded into the larger anti-grav sled. Wheelchairs using anti-grav units were also available.
Anti-Grav Sled
An anti-grav sled, sometimes referred to simply as an anti-grav is a device used to carry objects which are too heavy to lift manually. The technology used is similar to a hovercraft or anti-grav lift.
The flow capacitor is one component of an anti-grav sled; however, Reginald Barclay accidentally referred to it as a “flux capacitor” while recounting an embarrassing incident to Deanna Troi. She either did not notice the mistake, or did not want to correct the lieutenant, who had already been corrected by the 17-year-old Wesley Crusher earlier. (TNG: “Hollow Pursuits”)
Kasidy Yates and her crew sometimes used anti-grav sleds to transport cargo into her cargo ship. Although Sisko suggested using the transporter instead, hers was a Mk. V, which was ill-equipped to transport unstable bio-matter. (DS9: “Family Business”).
Antigraviton Emitter
The antigraviton emitter was a device that emitted antigraviton particles. This device was devleoped by Damar as part of an effort to disrupt the self-replicating minefield blocking off the Bajoran wormhole.
The emitter produced a field of antigraviton particles to fool proximity detonators on the self-replicating mines. With the detonators disabled, the entire minefield could be detonated simultaneously, thus preventing automatic replication of individual mines. (DS9: “Favor the Bold”, “Sacrifice of Angels”)
Antimatter Regulator
An antimatter regulator is a device that is used to regulate the flow of antimatter.
During Wesley Crusher’s first week at Starfleet Academy, Adam Martoni reprogrammed Crusher’s sonic shower to cover him with mud. But Wesley managed to give it back to Martoni, when he reprogrammed an antimatter regulator to spray chili sauce on Martoni. (TNG: “The Game”)
Barometer
A barometer was an meteorological instrument used to measure barometric pressure. Its measurement was in terms of units of millimeters of mercury, or mmHg.
The atmospheric pressure of Taurus II was 70 mm/Hg. (TOS: “The Galileo Seven”)
Making an analogy to barometric gradients of gas pressure, USS Voyager helmsman Tom Paris joked that Commander Tuvok would have made a good barometer, as his Vulcan physiology was sensitive to neutronic gradients. (VOY: “Fair Haven”)
Bio-Cylinder
A bio-cylinder is a standardized container designed to hold a particular type of organic matter. they are used by the Federation to test the effects of various technologies on living tissue. (VOY: “Distant Origin”)
Bio-Dampner
A bio-dampener is a small device developed by Erin and Magnus Hansen that cloaks the lifesigns of the person wearing it by creating a field around the body that simulates the physiometric conditions within the person’s environment, such as a starship. Essentially an electromagnetic version of camouflage. Magnus used the device to board a Borg cube undetected while conducting research on the Collective in the 2350s. Each unit has to be tailored to its user’s physiology. The crew of USS Voyager then used them to try and get a transwarp coil from a Borg ship, as part of Operation Fort Knox. The Borg did not seem to have adapted to the technology. (VOY: “Dark Frontier”)
Chronometer
A chronometer is a device used to keep track of time. Starships measure the passage of time when they traverse the space-time continuum other than Albert Einstein’s proper time by use of chronometers. (TOS: “The Naked Time”, “Tomorrow is Yesterday”, “The Mark of Gideon”)
On occasion, starships may need to reset the on-board chronometer, at which time a Federation time beacon may be consulted. (TNG: “Cause and Effect”)
Coil Scanner
A coil scanner is a type of hand-held sensor used by Starfleet. It can be modified to detect the quantum resonance oscillator inside a transporter module. In 2372, the crew of the USS Voyager used a coil scanner to search for a transporter module stolen by Seska. (VOY: "Maneuvers")
Coil Spanner
A coil spanner is an engineering tool with various uses. One variant of this technology is the interphasic coil spanner. (DS9: “Hard Time”)
In 2372, Lon Suder murdered fellow USS Voyager crewman Frank Darwin by striking him in the back of the head with a two-kilogram coil spanner. (VOY: “Meld”)
Chief O’Brien asked Worf to give him the coil spanner when he repaired a console in Ops. (DS9: “Bar Association”)
On a salvage mission to Empok Nor in 2373, Boq’ta asked Amaro to retrieve a coil spanner so he could loosen a bolt. Amaro returned with a flux coupler instead, to find Boq’ta killed by a Cardassian soldier. (DS9: “Empok Nor”)
On Enterprise NX-01, Lorian used a coil spanner to make adjustments to a plasma injector. (ENT: “E²”)
In 2375, Ezri Dax used a coil spanner to tune a phase amplifier on AR-558. (DS9: “The Siege of AR-558”)
Cutter Beam
A cutter beam is a hand-held tool that emits a beam of directed energy which is used to perform a cutting function.
A cutter beam was generated by a phaser-like tool used by Starfleet engineers in the 2260s. An engineer used such beam to free Scotty from the jammed Engineering core hatch in 2269. (TAS: “Beyond the Farthest Star”)
The phaser drilling tool seen in VOY: “Once Upon a Time” might also have been classified as a cutting beam.
Cutting Beam
A cutting beam is a beam of directed energy which is used to perform a cutting function.
Borg starships are known to have the ability to generate cutting beams of great power, strong enough to slice sections of a starship, or even a planet, open with great precision. In conjunction with the Borg tractor beam, their cutting beams are used to “scoop” pieces of starships or cities for assimilation by Borg drones and collectives. (ENT: “Regeneration”; TNG: “Q Who”, “The Best of Both Worlds”, “The Best of Both Worlds, Part II”)
The USS Melbourne’s saucer section was destroyed by a Borg cutting beam at the Battle of Wolf 359.
The USS Saratoga was also hit by a cutting beam, suffering severe damage resulting in a warp core breach. (DS9: “Emissary”)
Decoupler
A decoupler was a 24th century hand-held tool used for making adjustments to various pieces of technology.
In 2373, Captain Benjamin Sisko spent three hours with a tricorder and a decoupler tweaking the pattern buffers for the replicator systems aboard the USS Defiant in order to keep himself busy while en route to Ajilon Prime. When asked by Jadzia Dax if she could borrow his decoupler to check that he had the replicator buffers properly synchronized, he told her get her own, because he was going to use it to check the sonic shower relays. (DS9: “Nor the Battle to the Strong”)
Desealer
A desealer is a device that can unscramble most locking mechanisms. However, it takes some time to do so, and one must be careful not to get caught while the desealer does its work.
Quark wanted to use a desealer to open the doors to the chemist’s shop when he and Rom broke in, but Rom had enough technical expertise that he was able to open them quicker. This disturbed Quark, who did not feel that his “idiot” brother could be trusted after seeing such ingenuity. (DS9: “Necessary Evil”)
Desealing Rod
A desealing rod is a small, hand-held tool used to open locks and deseal doors.
In 2370, Rom used a desealing rod that Nog made to break into the ship’s store on Deep Space 9 and retrieve a strongbox hidden by Vaatrik during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. Rom was able to deseal the door in less than ten seconds. (DS9: “Necessary Evil”)
Directional Sonic Generator
A directional sonic generator was a device capable of producing a wide range of sound frequencies.
In 2370, Cardassian voles were damaging systems on Deep Space 9. O’Brien planned to adjust a directional sonic generator to produce a frequency that would be uncomfortable to vole’s ears and drive them out of hiding, but decided against it as it would take too long. When Quark complained about the vole problem, O’Brien demonstrated the directional sonic generator to him, but it greatly hurt the Ferengi’s highly sensitive ears. (DS9: “Playing God”)
Drilling Rig
A drilling rig was a mechanical device that was used to drill deep holes into the ground. The Enterprise (NX-01) was equipped with a portable drilling rig. In 2151, Malcolm Reed and Travis Mayweather used the device to take a core sample from Archer's Comet which was rich in eisillium. The drill hit a layer of magnesite which broke the drill bit, but the away team was able to replace the bit and successfully take a core sample. (ENT: "Breaking the Ice")
Duotronic Probe
A duotronic probe is an engineering tool used aboard Federation starships to regulate plasma flow. However, the gravitic caliper is a more precise instrument. (VOY: “Fair Trade”)
It may operate under duotronic computer system principles, which would align with Vorik’s statement of it being inferior to the gravitic caliper.
Since the Doctor used the same device for a medical scan in VOY: “Workforce”. it is possible that this device has multiple configurations
Dynoscanner
A dynoscanner is a sensor device used to detect low-level molecular activity.
While scanning Ceti Alpha V in conjunction with Project Genesis, the USS Reliant detected a minor energy flux reading on one of the ship’s dynoscanners, leading the crew to believe that the scanner was out of adjustment, that it contained life or that a particle of preanimate matter was caught in the matrix. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)
While attempting to pinpoint a chlorinide leak in the cargo bay of the USS Enterprise-D, Geordi La Forge suggested that maybe she should try a dynoscanner, because the tricorder was not picking up what it was they were seeking. (TNG: “Ethics”)
EJ-7 Interlock
An EJ-7 interlock is an engineering tool used to access or close panels. It is made up of tritanium composites. With an EJ-7 interlock, one could access every critical system on Deep Space 9.
When Miles O’Brien was assisting Neela in repairing a system in Odo’s security office, O’Brien remarked that an EJ-7 interlock would be required to close the panel they were working on. While looking for the interlock in his kit, he realized that it had gone missing. After a search, they found it in an access tunnel, melted into slag due to exposure to plasma. (DS9: “In the Hands of the Prophets”)
Emergency Beacon
Emergency beacons are large hand-held lamps that can be used to illuminate dark surroundings, similar to palm beacons and SIMs beacons.
The beacon can be modified to emit only certain wavelengths of light. In 2367, Data modified a emergency beacon to work on ultraviolet light. In order to do so, he had to replace the regular emitter module. (TNG: “Identity Crisis”)
Emergency Hand Actuator
Emergency hand actuators are small devices used to open doors aboard Starfleet vessels in the event of power loss. They are stored at convenient locations near turbolifts, Jefferies tubes, and other vital areas. Use of the device involves attaching it to either side of the door, then pulling the door open. (TNG: “Disaster”, “Starship Mine”; VOY: “Year of Hell”)
