Engineering Sections Flashcards
Hot rolled Steels
Most Common form used (I beam, reinforcing steel)
Can be galvanized for corrosion protection
Poor dimensional accuracy due to shrinkage after heating
Cold rolled steels
Also called commercial bright
Accurate dimensions
Susceptible to Corrosion
Flat Plate
Plate fabricated machinery
Black steel
Ship building
Sheet steel
Appliances
Machine guards
Often coated
Seam Welded Tube
Exhaust pipes
Flat material is rolled then welded
Not good for chemical applications as the weld is susceptible
Seamless Tube
Much stronger than a welded tube
Good for chemical applications
RHS
Rectangular hollow section
Frame Construction (Boat trailers)
High Buckling strength
Angled
Low building strength, poor bending
I-Beam
Excellent Bending strength
Poor torsion
Excellent buckling strength
C-Section
Poor Buckling and Twisting
General structural section
Silver Steel
High strength
Not actually silver
Able to be flame hardened
High speed steel
Drill, taps etc
extremely hard and durable
Can’t be machined using conventional methods
Hard copper tube
Straight
used for plumbing
Need welded corners to attach to for tight bends
Annealed Copper
Ductile
