Mechanical engineering
branch of engineering which combines engineering physics and mathematics with materials science.
Difference between gears and pulleys
Gears are a toothed wheel that works with another wheel to change the speed of a driving mechanism (for example, the engine of a vehicle) and the speed of the driven parts.
Pulleys are a wheel with a grooved rim that allows a rope to pass through, this acts to change the direction of a force applied to the rope and is used to lift heavy weights.
Definition of hydraulics
Hydraulics is a mechanical function that operates by introducing pressure to a liquid.
In hydraulics systems, mechanical movement is produced by, pumping liquid (oil), usually through hydraulic cylinders to move pistons.
General responsibilities of employers
here are lots of employer responsibilities, including:
Make the workplace safe.
Prevent risks to health.
Make sure that plant and machinery are safe to use.
Make sure safe working practices are set up and followed.
Make sure that all materials are handled, stored, and used safely.

Isolation and emergency power cut-off points
An isolation point is a part of electrical equipment that has been isolated so that energy cannot be transmitted to it.
Health and safety laws require workshop machinery to have some form of emergency disconnection of power supplies. Generally, this will take the form of a red emergency button through which the main power supply to the machine will be interrupted.
What is COSHH?
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 is a UK regulation which tells you the general requirements which employers must protect employees and other persons from the hazards of substances used at work.
This can be done by risk assessment, control of exposure, health surveillance and incident planning.
What does RIDDOR stand for?
Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations.
RIDDOR is the law which requires employers, and other people in charge of work premises, to report and keep records of work-related accidents which cause deaths or serious injuries (reportable injuries).
What is Electrical Engineering?
Electrical engineering is a discipline that studies the design, and application of equipment, devices, and systems that use electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism.
What is Aerospace Engineering?
Aerospace engineering is the main field of engineering which is concerned with the development of aircraft and spacecraft.
There are two major branches:
Aeronautical engineering.
Astronautical engineering.
What is Telecommunications Engineering?
Telecommunications Engineering is centred on electrical and computer engineering which looks to support and improve telecommunication systems. The work ranges from basic circuit design to strategic mass developments.
A telecommunication engineer’s role includes designing and overseeing the installation of telecommunications equipment systems and facilities.
What is Chemical Engineering?
Chemical Engineering is the discipline of engineering that is associated with the design, development, manufacture and testing of chemical products and chemical manufacturing processes.
What is Civil Engineering?
Civil engineering is the discipline of engineering that is associated with the design, development, manufacture and testing of infrastructures such as bridges, roads, airports, and services (gas, electric, water, waste / drainage) .
