Engineering Flashcards
Purpose of the F/O service system.
(3) electric fuel pumps that provide fuel to the boilers up to 300 PSI
(2) fuel oil service tanks with a capacity of 18,000 gallons.
(24) storage tanks capacity is about 1.9 million gallons.
State the type and location of the boilers onboard.
There are (2) 600 psi D-Type Located in the Fire Room.
Superheater
Heats steam from the boiler above saturation temperature, normal range 750-875 degrees.
Economizer
Where fees water first enters the boiler.
Increases feed water temperature 100-200 degrees.
Enters the economizer at 250 degrees and leaves at 350-450 degrees.
One per boiler .
Spot blowers
7 soot blowers per boiler .
Use steam to blow off boiler.
Turbine forced draft blower
(4) total
2 steam driven force draft blowers per boiler.
Provide combustion air for the boilers
Uses 600 PSIG AUX STEAM
Boiler safety valve
Protects from over pressurization
Each boiler has 3 safety valves and one pilot valve
2 steam drum boiler safety valves
1 super heater boiler safety valve
DFT DEAERATING FEED TANK
Stores feed water
Preheats condensate
De-aerates condensate
15psi and 250 degrees
Propeller
18’ with six blades
Shaft
Thrust
Line
Stern
Tail
Main thrust bearing
Provides axial movement of the main shaft
Line shaft bearing
Holds and supports weight of entire shaft
Line oil 2190
Main reduction gear
Converts high speed low torque from the turbine to low speed high torque to turn the shaft and move the ship through the water.
Electro hydraulic steering unit
There are two electro/hydraulic pumps
One port and one starboard
One runs at a time for 24hrs
The port runs on even days and the starboard runs odd days
Ways to steer ship
Remotely from bridge (helm)
Locally by trick wheel (aft steering) degree received from bridge first
Emergency hand pump (100 rotations make a degree ) hydraulic fluid moves from one to the other .
After loss of hydraulics
Chain fall assembly
Ratchet ball assembly
