Engine Flashcards
How many cylinders?
14, double row with pressure type carburetor
What type of engines does Lil have?
Four Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines
What is the reduction ratio?
16:9
Carburetors?
Pressure type
Supercharged with internal blower
No turbo super chargers
Engine primer injects fuel into supercharger blower section
What is the horse power?
1200 at max power (47”/2700) (5 min max)
1100 at METO (43.5”/2600) (15 min max)
Propellers
Hamilton Standard
3 bladed constant speed
Full feathering
Describe feather procedure
Push feather button, when prop reaches full feather, button pops out.
If button fails to pop out, the prop will go to feather and unfeather.
Manually pull out the button if this happens
How do you unfeather?
Press feather button until 800rpm and then release
Monitor RPM closely to avoid overspeed
Mixtures, what are the three positions?
Idle cut off
Auto lean
Auto rich
Magnetos
R,L, both and cut off
Off is briefly selected during shutdown to make sure they are grounded
R and L are tested during run up to ensure both are firing
Primer
Shoots fuel into the supercharger blower section (empeller)
They are electric
Cowl flaps
Electric Positions: open, off, closed Open on ground Trail for takeoff (50% open) Trail for cruise
Carb heat
Center console Open Off Close No position indicators Hold in cold position long enough to ensure full cold then return to off
Engine indicators
Manifold pressures
Tachometers
Cylinder head temp gauge
Two dual indicating gauges
Thermo couple installed under the spark plug of no 1 cylinder of each engine
Fuel pressure gauges
Two dual indicators
Show fuel pressure at the carburetor in pounds per square inch
Pressure transmitters located in engine nacelles
Oil Pressure Gauges
2 dual indicators
Pressure transmitters located in each engine nacelle
Oil temp gauges
On same gauge as the oil and fuel pressure gauges
Temp gauge in each engine oil sump
Chip detector
8 bulbs
Upper four correspond to magnetic plugs in nose case
Lower four to the main sumps or main engine oil screen
DC electrical system supplies power to the detectors
Starters
Direct crank electric starter
Can be shut off by starter interrupter switches on FE panel
Engine interrupter switches
Four
Remove power from starter and feathering pump
Except for #1: starter only not feathering pump
Magnetos
Bosch
Mounted on front of each engine - two
Left / Right
Do not use one mag above 33” = detonation if done too long
Induction system
Integral superchargers
Pressure ejected carburetor
Oil - how many systems?
4 independent systems
Oil
Capacity
Min
Service to max 28 gallons
Min for flight is 20 gallons
Operation of oil system
Oil flows from tank by gravity and suction to engine driven pumps
After oil flows through engine to lube and cool. It flows to sump.
Scavenge pump picks up oil and forces it through the cooler and back to the tank.
Engines 1&3 have air wolf oil filter prior to oil cooler
Oil specs
Engine 1: SAE 60 120 AD
Engines 2,3 & 4: SAE 60 weight non detergent straight mineral oil
50 weight can be used as an alternate
Where is the oil cooler?
Below each nacelle
No controllable doors
Feathering Oil
Each tank has a stand pipe
5 gallons
