Total Omniscience
PoV in which the narrator knows everything about all of the characters and events in a story.
Limited or Selective Omniscience
PoV in which the narrator sees into the minds of some, but not all characters.
Impartial Omniscience
PoV employed to present thoughts and actions of a character, but doesn’t judge or comment on them.
Editorial Omniscience
PoV when an omniscient narrator goes beyond reporting thoughts, but also makes commentary on them.
Objective Point of View
PoV in which the third-person narrator merely reports dialogue/action with no interpretation or access to thoughts.
Omniscient or All-knowing Narrator
Narrator who can move freely through the consciousness of any character. Has complete knowledge of all events.
Participant or First-person Narrator
Narrator who is participant in the action. Narrator refers themselves as “I”.
Observer
First person narrator who is relatively detached from, or plays only minor role in the events described.
Nonparticipant or Third Person Narrator
Narrator who doesn’t appear in the story as a character, but capable of revealing thoughts/motives of characters.
Innocent or Naïve Narrator
Character who fails to understand all the implications of the story they’re telling-can generate irony, sympathy, or pity
Unreliable Narrator
Narrator who relates events in a subjective or distorted manner, usually becomes apparent early on in the story.
Interior Monologue
Extended presentation of character’s thoughts, usually present tense and without quotation marks, usually reads as if a character were speaking aloud to themselves, for the reader to overhear.
Stream of Consciousness
Modern narrative technique, uses various literary devices to duplicate the subjective/associative nature of human consciousness.
Characterization
The technique a writer uses to create, reveal, or develop the characters in a narrative.
Character Description
Author overly relates physical or mental traits of a character, almost invariably depicts what lies beneath the surface of the character.
