“You’re such a funny girl. You never show your feelings much, do you? you don’t behave as if you were in love”
Grace
In conversation with Catherine in Act 1 Scene 1, just before John shows up to talk to Arthur about the engagement
It’s gives us insight into Catherine’s personality and how she isn’t one to express her feelings much. She seems to be reserved
“It’s going to be brought up against me all my life. Ronnie’s the good little boy, I’m the bad little boy. you’ve just stuck a couple of labels on us that nothing on earth is we’ve going to change.”
Dickie
during the conversation with his parents and Catherine after church, his parents are harsh about his work ethic.
It shows the internal feelings of dickie and how he feels about his brother.
“how proud and honoured I was by your acceptance of me, and how determined I was to make you a loyal and devoted husband—and to maintain you in the state to which you were accustomed”
John
In Act 1 Scene 1 after John has talked to arthur about Catherine, him and Catherine are left alone while the others prepare a little celebration.
This significance to this is that it shows their relationship and gives some context into their actually feelings for one another since we don’t received that same idea from Catherine’s conversation with her mother alone
“no, darling. Of course you didn’t. We’ll go upstairs now, shall we, and get out of these nasty wet clothes”
Grace
Act 1 Scene 1 right after Catherine saw Ronnie and found out why he was home early. She gets her mother to come and talk with Ronnie.
It’s significant bc it shows the way Ronnie’s family immediately believes he is totally innocent in the stealing affairs. They couldn’t fathom the idea of him stealing. It also shows that Catherine gets her mom instead of Arthur bc they know he would be upset
“God, how little imagination some people have! Why should they torture a child of that age”
Catherine
Act 1 Scene 1 after Grace convinces Ronnie to go get changed and warmed up. John and Catherine are having a conversation about Ronnie’s being expelled. John is very adamantly on the side that the Service is in the right
It’s also significant because it shows us insight into Catherine as a person. How she immediately acts with rage, instead of comfort like her mother. She’s hot headed and opiniated
“Why didn’t you come to me now? Why did you have to go and hide in the garden?”
Arthur
Act 1 Scene 1 right as the family is toasting the engagement of John and Catherine, Ronnie arrival is mentioned by Violet. Arthur harshly acts to see the boy immediately
