Introduction

A

“The hardest prison to escape from is your mind”.

  • I, Kreis Shirasagi wouldn’t have believed this had I not been sentenced to the Kukril maximum security prison on Sakhalin Island.
  • The darkened winter season had dawned upon us - bolts of lightning hurtled rhythmically towards the ground every ten seconds.
  • Surrounded by the sea of Okhotsk on the east coast of Russia with nowhere to go, it would be seen as inescapable. But it was all about to change…

In one night.

Paragraph 1

A
  • 10:30pm - there I was laying in my cell, tossing my orange casio watch up and down eager for time to speed up.
  • The longer I stayed in that animalistic cage, the more I would suffer, the weaker I would get.
  • Conditions there were inhumane, unbearable for any boy. It was as if the Russian government had forgotten we existed.
  • All inmates were only given meagre amounts of scrappy food, the same menu every day and only an hour of fresh air to breathe in the courtyard.

Paragraph 2

A
  • Thankfully I had only experienced Kukril for two weeks, some prisoners had been there for years.
  • The toilets were broken and sewage systems were clogged. I had just about had it with that awful place.
  • I remembered the time where I had a Rolex, how I successfully stole it from a gentleman without anyone noticing. I thought I was invincible.

Paragraph 3

A
  • My father was a Japanese car engineer and owned a car manufacturing plant in Russia. The perfect opportunity lay right before me to steal a brand new GTR and sell it to some rich oligarch. Or so I thought…
  • Father told me he was moving back to Japan because of the disruption I caused, and that jail time would be beneficial for me. Harsh but perhaps true.
  • “Really beneficial - it’s going great” I thought. But at that moment it was about to be a lot greater. The “plan of escape was to be implemented”

Paragraph 4

A
  • “Beep” went the sound of my watch as it struck 11pm. At this time the guards were off inside patrol duties.
  • Now was the time or it was never going to happen. Strapping my watch back on without further thought, I managed to shove the heavy wooden desk away with relative ease to expose a fragmented vent.
  • For 5 days I had chipped away at the sides with a spoon so it could be large enough for me to fit through.
  • My heart was racing faster than the stolen GTR. “This is it” I quietly muttered - and I crept in.

Paragraph 5

A
  • I wasn’t alone in trying to escape; my mind went back to earlier that week as I stealthily crawled through.
  • One day I happened to meet this boy called Free while walking the courtyard. We noticed how the vents were connected to the roof and if we were to make it there, we could get past the guards that were below ground.
  • Time would tell if we could get to the unguarded east side of the Island undetected and dash away through one of the speedboats. At least that was the idea.
  • Of course we needed a few days to chip away and widen the vents. Who would have known what was actually going to happen that day?

Paragraph 6

A
  • In an instant, I felt a rush of cold air stroke against my skin. I looked up and found an opening to the roof. The steel mesh door was already open, so I climbed out as subtly as possible.
  • “So you finally made it” spoke a voice. I turned round to see Free leaning against the side.
  • “Yes, I did somewhat,” I replied with a sigh of relief “glad to be out but that’s only half the story”
  • “Listen this may be our only chance; we have to be pretty hushed, but fast moving. Just remember in the quest for victory there’s no holding back.” uttered Free. I nodded and we both headed off to the eastern building side.

Paragraph 7

A
  • Currently we were on the western side so we had to tread tactfully to where the speedboats were.
  • Pitch black was the silent atmosphere outside; our heads were down with our one and only goal - to escape.
  • During this time the guards were completely unaware of what was going on. Most of them were half-asleep anyway.
  • The end was near. Free and I gazed at the speed boats just metres away. As expected, there were no guards on that side of Sakhalin. All that was left to do was jump.

Paragraph 8

A
  • It was quite a steep five metre drop, but we did so without hesitation, landing on the stony sand shaking and shivering in the cold. After coming so far, there was no capitulation now.
  • Free’s father was a fisherman, so he knew how to drive a speedboat. Japan was our destination, our families were there so it would be a lot safer for us and our future and betterment.
  • Dusting ourselves off, we hopped on one of the speedboats and silently sped off into the sparkling night…

Conclusion

A

The lightning I could hear and see before was gone. I wondered to myself if it was really there at all…

…or if it was just a trap in my hallucinations. Anyway I know better now, we both do. After all “the hardest prison to escape from is your mind”.
