Q

Why did he feel a presentiment of danger?

A

He felt a presentiment of danger as he knew that the Greeks were formidable warriors and it wasn’t a smart move to make enemies with them. Also, abducting a married woman was morally unethical and Hector knew that. Even though the Trojans were strong warriors with unbreachable walls, Hector knew the power the Greeks had and how intelligent they were and also the fact they had warriors like Achilles.

Q

What did Achilles’s mother do to safeguard him against the prophecy of the Fates?

A

His mother, Thetis, upon hearing that Achilles will die at a young age, dipped him in the river Styx. As she held him by the heels, the water of the river which made every part of his body invulnerable didn’t touch his heel. Hence, the heel of Achilles was always vulnerable.

Q

What happened when Eris, the goddess of discord, threw the golden apple among the guests?

A

Answer) There was a fight for it between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. The choice was to be made by Paris of Troy. The goddesses offered Paris a blessing as a bribe for the apple; Hera offered to make him the lord of Europe and Asia Minor, Athena offered him brilliance in war, and Aphrodite offered Helen of Sparta, the world’s most beautiful woman, who was at that point wedded to King Menelaus. Paris picked Aphrodite, a choice that caused the Trojan War, and eventually the end of both Paris and his city, Troy.

Q

Did the oracle’s prophecy regarding Paris come true? Elaborate.

A

Oracle’s prophecy did come true. It was prophesied that Paris will bring ruin to his city Troy. That did come true as by choosing one goddess over 2 others, he made enemies with those goddesses also by abducting a married Greek woman, he also made enemies with the Greeks and the Greeks were one of the most formidable armies and were people to be afraid of due to their power and cleverness. The Greeks destroyed Troy and it was because of the decisions Paris made.

Q

Why did Scrooge’s nephew visit him? Based on their conversation identify two characteristics of both, the uncle and the nephew?

A

Fred wanted to invite his uncle, Scrooge, for dinner on the Christmas eve.
Fred represents the spirit, joy and generosity of Christmas. His voice is ‘cheerful’, and he is associated with the colour red (‘ruddy’) warmth and heat, in contrast to his cold, selfish uncle. We learn about Fred’s positive nature from his dialogue. “I’ll keep my Christmas humour to the last. So, A Merry Christmas, uncle!” Everything he says focuses on the positive aspects.
Scrooge on the other hand only appreciates money: he cannot understand matters of the soul such as marrying for love, rather than wealth, or being cheerful just because it is Christmas. Scrooge seems to have no human feeling, warmth or love for his fellow man. We can see just how generous Fred is, because he doesn’t become angry or frustrated with his uncle.

Q

3 Briefly discuss the significance of the chains that the ghost of Marley was carrying?

A

The chain that Marley wears is compared to misery and suffering that he has to bear even in afterlife. The chains are made-up with symbols of money and greed, such as the cash-boxes.
‘Chain forged in life’ – burden/ no freedom.
Marley feels guilty for not being a good person/not being helpful, when he was alive. He is trapped in the chain for eternity for being materialistic, rude and a miser. The chains signify everlasting punishment.

18
Q

1 Who was the first spirit? What is the business that brings the spirit to Scrooge?

A

The first spirit was the Ghost of Christmas Past. The spirit takes Scrooge on a tour through his childhood and earlier life, so that Scrooge is able to see his former self and see how he changes. It helps Scrooge feel pity and compassion for his fellow human beings.

19
Q

How was Scrooge in the past different from Scrooge in the present?

A

Scrooge is no longer the cheerful man he once was. He used to be fond of his sister and is “uneasy” in his mind when he thinks about Fred because he realizes that he shouldn’t have been cold and rude to Fan’s son. He was also happy to work for Fezziwig in his earlier days. His affection for his employer is shown in his delighted exclamation ‘Bless his heart’. In this instance, Scrooge is reminded of his appalling meanness when he complains about his clerk, Bob, having a day off.

20
Q

Why according to you, did the First Spirit take Scrooge to revisit the memories of Fan and Fezziwig?

A

The First Spirit takes Scrooge to revisit the memories of his loving sister Fanny to remind him of his mistreatment of Fred after she passed away. It then escorts Scrooge to Fezziwig who represents the spirit of Christmas. As Scrooge remembers how elated he was to work for Fezziwig and the importance of appreciating people, he begins to think about what a terrible employer he has been to Bob Cratchit

21
Q

Who was Tiny Tim? Describe the Cratchit family’s toast to Scrooge. What is striking about the way the Cratchit family celebrates Christmas?

A

Tiny Tim is Bob Cratchit’s youngest son who walks with a crutch owing to his disability. The Cratchits grudgingly raise a toast to Bob’s employer, Scrooge. The mere mention of Scrooge’s name dampens the spirits of the family. Despite their poverty, they are “happy, grateful, pleased with one another, and contented with the time”. They take pride in their appearance and brush up their shoddy clothes to look more presentable. The family also works together as a team to prepare the humble feast of a goose and pudding.

22
Q

Who were the two children the Spirit had under his robe? What did the Spirit tell Scrooge about them? How can you relate it to the problems facing society?

A

The children who appear from under the Spirit’s robe are ‘Ignorance’ and ‘Want’. The Spirit tells Scrooge that they are mankind’s children and are theappalling result of people not caring for each other. ‘Want’, meaning poverty, is the result of people’s selfishness in not helping those in need. ‘Ignorance’, seen as more dangerous, is the result of a lack of education. Without education, people are unable to aim for a better way of life or escape their poverty. It may also refer to ignorant, or misguided ideas, about the poor.

23
Q

Where does the third spirit take Scrooge? What does Scrooge see and how does he react?

A

The ‘Ghost of Christmas Yet to come’ took Scrooge to the future to show him how his future might look if he did not mend his ways.

24
Q

Who was the dead man? How did Scrooge react to his death?

A

Scrooge did not seem to know the dead man. He was afraid to remove the sheet from his face when asked to do so by the spirit. He was afraid that he might see himself and was not ready to face the reality.

25
Q

I will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year. I will
Live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach.” Why does Scrooge say this? Explain.

A

The three spirits had shown Scrooge the shadows of his past, present and future to show him how he lacked the Christmas spirit in him. During the course of the novella, he feels regret, remorse, excitement, happiness, sadness at all the foreshadows that he was shown by the spirits. This is why he says that he shall he shall hold all the three in his heart.
