Eng Co Fire Ops Flashcards
What is radiation
Travel of heat through space, no material substance required.
Same as light-straight lines, unless blocked it’s even in all directions.
I regard to fire spread what is convection
The travel of heat through the motion of heated matter
What is greatest cause of exposure fires?
Radiation of heat
What is conduction
The travel of heat through a solid body.
What is flashover
The ignition of combustibles in an area heated by convection radiation or both.
8 basic operations of engine companies
Rescue, water supply, initial attack lines, backup lines, exposure, heavy stream development, tactical use of protective systems, overhaul
Positioning of a particular unit at a fire depends on what 4 things?
Fire structure, water supply, response pattern and size/location
The difference between static and residual pressure will indicate how many more lines can be supplied by the water main.
How many more with 5, 10, 15%
One with 5% two with 10%, three with 15%
If an increase in rpms is not accompanied by an increase in discharge pressure…?
The pump is at true capacity.
Choice of initial attack lines are affected by:
Size/location of fire and type/condition of building, intended use of line, personnel available to operate line.
Three types of fog nozzles
Constant flow, variable flow and the “so-called” automatic nozzle
Three things to remember about backup lines
Larger and more gpm, solid stream, backup crew ready (rit)
What is an exposure hazard
A condition that will promote the spread of fire if a fire should start in or reach that area.
To be effective, heavy stream or master stream require what gpm’s
400-2000
Solid stream master streams operate at what psi?
80
Fog nozzles are intended to operate at what psi?
100
Code requirement for standpipe diameter pipe
4 inches and 6in for buildings over 100ft
Define dry system
Vertical pipe or riser running up through or along the outside of a building.
Modern codes normally require that a water supply meet one of the following criteria.
Min flow of 250gpm at a residual pressure of 65psi on the roof.
A min pressure of 40psi on a 1 1/8 tip connected to 100ft of 2 1/2 hose attached to highest outlet on roof.
Wet standpipe may be supplied by one or more methods
Gravity tank, city water main, pressure tank, private supply with pump
Four basic types of sprinkler systems
Wet, dry, preaction and deluge
