Sound Inventory
A pool of sounds which English speakers use to construct the words of their language
Phonetics
The study and classification of speech sounds
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
IPA is designed to represent only those qualities of speech that are part of oral language
Received Pronunciation (RP)
The IPA symbols and sample words for all sounds that occur in the standard accent of British English (diagram on pg 4 of PDF)
General American
The standard reference accent of North American English (diagram on pg 5 of PDF)
Frequency
Very common measure of sound
Vocal Tract
-The entire passage above the larynx.
-This is where speech sounds are shaped.

Articulators
All parts of the vocal apparatus which are involved in speech production
Place of Articulation
The point of closest constriction in the vocal tract as a criterion for the description and classification of consonants.
Bilabial
Sounds which are characterized by a constriction at the lips
Unrounded
Vowels that you pronounce with your lips spread
Labio-dentals
Involve only the lower lip and addition-ally the upper teeth. [f]
Inter-dental
The latter place of articulation
Palato-alveolar
The constriction is between the hard palate and the alveolar ridge, slightly further back than for alveolar sounds. [ ʃ ]
Palatal
The tongue is raised toward the hard palate. [ j]
