Enfield Flashcards
Enfield has had regular floods, for example in…
2006, 2007 and 2008
Why has Enfield had issues with drainage and water quality
*The spread of urban structures has increased surface runoff and channel flow, e.g. in the River Lea
*Surface runoff from roads has increased levels of pollutants such as oil and heavy metals in watercourses
*Water pollution also comes from domestic sources, pipes feed directly into rivers
How many homes in Enfield are at risk of flooding
Over 9000 homes in Enfield are at risk of flooding
What percentage of houses in Enfield have wastewater pipes (from e.g. toilets, showers and dishwashers) that feed directly into rivers.
Up to 10%
What year did the project begin in Enfield
2012
What were the aims of the project in Enfield
*Reduce flood risk and limit the impacts of flooding on habitats and residential areas
*Reduce surface runoff from roads and pollutants entering rivers in order to improve water quality.
*Provide more habitats for wildlife and new recreational areas for residents
What SUDs were used in Enfield
*Vegetated trenches were created around roads to absorb runoff and decrease flood risk
*Rain planters were installed in schools - collect rainwater and manage the flow of water into
drains, lowering flood risk. This also provided opportunities to educate children about water management
*Wetlands have been constructed to improve vvater quality E.g. reed beds were created around Salmons
Brook to decrease surface runoff from roads and filter water before it enters the river
Who was involved in the project in Enfield
*Defra and Thames Water are providing funding. In 2012, Defra granted £340,000 to the project to construct more SUDS.
*Local schools - Thames21 offers education sessions for local schools to increase engagement.
In 2015, 1000 students were involved in litter picking and wildlife monitoring.
*Local residents - Volunteers have been involved in quality monitoring and litter pickups
What have been some of the successes of the project in Enfield
*Flood risk seems to be reduced e.g. high rainfall in December 2013 and January 2014 did not cause significant flooding in Enfield
*SUDS have reduced ammonia levels in Salmons Brook by 67% and nitrogen levels by 43%.
*Populations of eels and some species of insects, e.g. dragonflies, have increased
What are some drawbacks of the project in Enfield
Pollution and litter are still an issue in many rivers
