Q

” I am ashamed of my long tonuge. Let us make a bargain never to refer to this again”
reputation
chapter 1

A
  • He knows he shouldnt be engaging in gossip and is something he sould refrain from, thus he is indifferent from curosity as he percieves talking about events as trivial gossip rather than an investigation.
  • His worldview is seemed to be framed in a different way to Utterson’s
  • The metonymy of “long tongue” for story shows that he feels comfortable using informal language around Mr Utterson, which demonstrates their familiarity with each other. It shows his flaws also - he is criticising himself for gossip despite claiming it his moral rule not to care nor do it
-Stevenson explores how the reputation that Victorian gentleman should have is stringently laid out

Q

“for the man trampled camly over the child’s body and left her screaming on the ground”
innocence vs violence
chapter 1

A
  • he is an observant character but the difference between him and Utterson is apparent thorughout the text
  • It also shows that he indulges himslef in gossip which we later learn that he disproves of - each of the characters in the text display minor breaches of their morals and sentiments perhaps to show that evil or misconduct is an innate part of human nature
  • “Trampled calmly” is an oxymoron which suggests that the perpetrator is unsettlingly comfortable and acquainted with violence. This suggests that Enfield analytically obeserved the evenets that unfoled before him as he was able to pick up on Hyde’s emotions

Q

“Bur Mr Enfield only nodded his head seriously, and walked on once more in silence”

A
  • He is overtly inclined to to engaged with what occurs around him than Utterson is
  • The verb “nodded” is explicitly passive and disinterested, alternatively, it could portray how he is speechless as a result of confusion
