16
Q

What does the energy from the generator create?

A

Electricity

17
Q

What are the advantages of fossil fuels?

A

Relatively cheap and easy to obtain, most of our infrastructure is designed to run using fossil fuels

18
Q

What are the disadvantages of fossil fuels?

A

Non renewable and has a limited supply. Coal and oil release sulfur dioxide gas which can cause acid rain

19
Q

What is carbon capture?

A

Carbon capture and storage is a way to prevent carbon dioxide building up in the atmosphere which is stored underground.

20
Q

What is nuclear energy converted into in a nuclear power station?

A

Heat energy

21
Q

What are the advantages of nuclear power

A

They do not produce harmful pollutants into the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide.

22
Q

What are the disadvantages of nuclear power?

A

Non renewable. if there is an accident, large amounts of radioactive material could be released into the environment.
Nuclear waste remains radioactive and is hazardous to health for thousands of years, so it must be stored safely.

23
Q

What can energy not do?

A

It cannot be created or destroyed. This is called conservation of energy.

24
Q

What is the national grid?

A

Electricity is distributed from power stations to consumers through the National Grid, which allows distant power stations to be used. It also allows a mix of different energy resources to be used efficiently to supply the country’s electricity, whatever the local demand. Reliable supply of electricity

25
Q

Give examples of consumers of electricity

A

Shops, factories, homes

26
Q

Explain why transformers are used in the National Grid.

A

A step-up transformer increases the voltage in order to decrease the current before it travels through the transmission lines. A lower current ensures that less energy is wasted as heat in the transmission lines, and makes the process more efficient.

27
Q

What is the role of the steam in a power station?

A

It turns the turbines

28
Q

What does the generator convert the movement of kinetic energy into?

A

Electricity

29
Q

What is a step down transformer?

A

It reduces the voltage to a safe level

30
Q

Which type of energy has a high decomposition cost?

A

Nuclear.

31
Q

Which power stations run all the time?

A

Nuclear and coal power station stations run all the time because they take the longest to start up
