energyyy Flashcards
what does burning fossil fuels generate and cause?
they cause global warming and release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
what is the element for sulphur dioxide?
SO2
what is biomass energy?
Biomass energy is generated from decaying plant or animal waste. It can also be an organic material which is burned to provide energy, eg heat, or electricity.
what are the advantages of biomass energy?
- There is no increase in overall CO2 levels.
- renewable. A cheap and readily available source of energy etc
what are the disadvantages of biomass energy?
When burned, they give off atmospheric pollutants
- Greenhouse gases such as water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are released.
what are the advantages of wind energy?
- renewable resource
- there are no fuel costs
what are the disadvantages of wind energy?
- The amount of electricity generated depends on the strength of the wind.
- noisy, Manufacture and implementation of wind farms can be costly.
what are the advantages of hydro energy?
- Tidal barrages and hydroelectric power stations are very reliable and can be easily switched on.
- water energy in its various forms is renewable, no fuel costs
what are the disadvantages of water energy?
- Hydroelectricity dams flood farmland and push people from their homes.
- Tidal barrages destroy the habitat of estuary species, including wading birds.
What are the advantages of solar energy?
- Solar energy is a renewable energy resource and there are no fuel costs.
- No harmful polluting gases are produced.
what are the disadvantages of solar energy?
- Although warm water can be produced even on cloudy days, solar panels do not work at night.
- expensive; inefficient, do not work at night
What are fossil fuels?
Formed by the remains of living organisms, they release heat energy when burned yet have chemical energy stored within them.
What is the fossil fuel that is stored as chemical energy?
Coal
What stores the heat energy?
Water and steam which transfers as movement energy (kinetic)
What energy does the turbine release as?
Movement energy
What does the energy from the generator create?
Electricity
What are the advantages of fossil fuels?
Relatively cheap and easy to obtain, most of our infrastructure is designed to run using fossil fuels
What are the disadvantages of fossil fuels?
Non renewable and has a limited supply. Coal and oil release sulfur dioxide gas which can cause acid rain
What is carbon capture?
Carbon capture and storage is a way to prevent carbon dioxide building up in the atmosphere which is stored underground.
What is nuclear energy converted into in a nuclear power station?
Heat energy
What are the advantages of nuclear power
They do not produce harmful pollutants into the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide.
What are the disadvantages of nuclear power?
Non renewable. if there is an accident, large amounts of radioactive material could be released into the environment.
Nuclear waste remains radioactive and is hazardous to health for thousands of years, so it must be stored safely.
What can energy not do?
It cannot be created or destroyed. This is called conservation of energy.
What is the national grid?
Electricity is distributed from power stations to consumers through the National Grid, which allows distant power stations to be used. It also allows a mix of different energy resources to be used efficiently to supply the country’s electricity, whatever the local demand. Reliable supply of electricity
