Energy works Flashcards
what is energy?
the ability to make things move or change
name some things about fossil fuels
they take million of years to form. They form from dead plants and animals. Coal, oil and gasoline, and natural gas are fossil fuels. They will eventually be used up and are nonrenewable.
What is potential energy?
Stored energy. like the roller coaster on top of the hill.
The heavier the object, the more potential energy.
The higher the release point, the more potential energy.
What is kinetic energy?
Motion energy - falling objects
What is mechanical energy?
energy in motion - like pedaling a bike or an electric mixer
What is chemical energy?
stored in food and batteries
what is sound energy?
energy from an instrument (like the tv or radio)
what is heat energy?
energy from moving atoms. the object becomes warm or hot (like an oven or toaster)
What is light energy?
energy that you can see (lamp or computer screen)
What is motion energy?
kinetic (same thing)
What is electrical energy?
energy that runs through wires (like lamps, tv’s and computers)
Renewable energy - what is biomass?
material from plants and animals
what is geothermal?
energy from inside the EARTH
What is hydroelectric?
water energy (water wheel)
What is wind energy? (wind turbines)
considered clean energy! wind is always available. one negative is that they take up a lot of space and we need room for them.
what is solar energy?
energy from the SUN. People get the sun’s energy by eating plants, because the plants use the sun’s energy to make food.
Energy Transfers and Changes - What is transformation?
transformed energy. Energy CHANGES from one from of energy to another
What is transferred energy?
energy moves from one energy to another
What is collision energy?
when objects collide…energy transfers from one object to another. Think of the marbles.
Circuits and Waves - What are circuits?
a path for electricity to go through. Circuits must be CLOSED in order to work
What are series circuits?
1 battery, 2 bulbs. When one bulb goes out the other one does also.
What are parallel circuits?
1 battery, 2 bulbs. When one bulb goes out the other one STAYS ON
How do waves travel?
waves travel in constant and predictable patterns
What is a wavelength?
the space between 2 wave peaks
