energy vocab Flashcards
Gravitational
the energy possessed or acquired by an object due to a change in its position when it is present in a gravitational field.
radiant energy
the physical energy resulting from electromagnetic radiation, usually observed as it radiates from a source into the surrounding environment.
chemical energy
energy stored in bonds of chemical compounds.
thermal energy
the energy contained within a system that is responsible for its temperature.
elastic energy
energy stored as a result of applying a force to deform an elastic object.
nuclear energy
a form of energy released from the nucleus, the core of atoms, made up of protons and neutrons.
geothermal energy
heat energy from the earth
sound energy
comes from vibrations moving through something. sound energy is the result when a force, either sound or pressure, makes an object or substance vibrate.
mechanical energy
the energy of either an object in motion or the energy that is stored in objects by their position.
hydroelectric energy
a renewable source of energy that generates power by using a dam or diversion structure to alter the natural flow of a river or other body of water.
series circuits
a path along which the whole current flows through each component.
parallel circuits
has two or more paths for the electricity to flow, the loads are parallel to each other.
power source
the origin of incoming electricity
connector
parts or devices used for electrically connecting or disconnecting circuits.
load
an electrical component or portion of a circuit that consumes (active) electric power.
