Energy use Flashcards
Per capita energy consumption
the energy use per person, usually worked out for a country. The total amount of energy consumed by the country divided by the total population (mean energy use per person)
How does affluence impact energy use?
Generally, higher affluence causes higher energy use. Affluent societies run public buildings and services. Affluent individuals can afford energy hungry appliances, cars, air travel and high embodied energy products.
How does industry impact energy use?
Primary (mining, agriculture) and secondary (steel and chemical manufacturing) industries require high energy impacts whereas tertiary (finance, retail) and quaternary (IT) industries require lower energy inputs per unit of economic output
How does climate impact energy use?
Areas that have cold winters require energy for cooling, hot climates require energy for cooling
How does social and cultural awareness impact energy use?
Energy shortages drive energy conservation, plentiful energy may cause wastefulness. Environmental awareness may lower energy use through increased efficiency or less wasteful behaviour.
Factors affecting per capita energy consumption
affluence, cost of energy, type of industries, climate, environmental awareness
Domestic energy uses
space heating, water heating, cooling, lighting, running appliances
Agricultural energy uses
machinery, manufacture of agrichemicals, food processing, transport of goods, refrigeration, water pumping, aeration
Industrial energy uses
Industrial machinery, pumps, presses, conveyors, smelting, casting, molding, distillation, water/sewage treatment, chemical manufacture
