Energy Transfer: Particles Flashcards
Why are saucepans made of metal?
Because metal is a good conductor of energy, energy is transferred through it quickly. This is conduction.
What 3 ways can energy be transferred by?
Conduction, convection and radiation
How do particles transfer energy in conduction?
They vibrate and collide and transfer the heat
What are bad conductors of energy called?
Insulators
Give an example of an insulator?
Wood and many non-metals
Can insulators not at all transfer heat?
They can transfer heat, but very slowly
Are liquids good conductors of energy?
No they are very bad conductors
Why do gases and liquids not conduct heat/energy well?
Because there particles are much more spread out than in solids
