Energy Transfer By Heating Flashcards
every object emits what?
Infrared radiation
How does the temperature of an object effect the amount of infrared radiation it emits?
the hotter an object is the more radiation is emitted.
what is the electromagnetic spectrum?
Waves that can travel through a vacuum.
matte surfaces are good absorbers of radiation, why?
the radiation from the matte surface reflects and can hit the surface again.
why do smooth surfaces reflect radiation better?
they are smooth so the radiation shouldn’t reflect and hit the surface again.
why do solids keep the structure they do?
the particles have little movement and kinetic energy
liquids particles have to what?
touch together, they still have more movement than solids however.
materials that are conductors do what?
transfer a lot of energy (usually in the form of heat)
insulators are good at what?
retaining energy.
why do metals conduct electricity
they have free electrons.
what does convection apply to
fluids (liquids and gases)
why do fluids raise when heated?
the particles gain more kinetic energy, thus the density decreases and they gain
what three things affect the rate of evaporation?
- Surface area
- Temperature of the liquid
- Draught or flow of air above the liquid
list the two things which affect the rate of condensing:
- Surface area
- temperature of the surface
how does evaporation work?
molecules escape from the surface of the liquid, they continue to escape until all the liquid has evaporated.
