Q

What are the steps of a coal power station?
1. Furnace
2. Boiler
3. Turbine
4. Generator

A
  1. Coal is burnt (chemical –> heat)
  2. Water is turned into steam (heat –> kinetic)
  3. Steam turns the blades of the turbine (kinetic)
  4. A coil placed inside a magnetic field turns and produces an electric field (kinetic –> electrical)

Q

How does wind power work?

A

The kinetic store of the wind causes the turbines to spin and gain kinetic energy, turning a generator creating electrical energy.

Q

How does geothermal energy work?

A

Cool water is pumped into the ground where there are hot rocks so the thermal store of the water increases and steam rises to turn a turbine and a generator creating electrical energy.

Q

How does hydroelectric energy work?

A

The water stored high up in a dam has a store of gravitational energy and as it is released it turns the blades of a turbine (kinetic) then a generator creating electrical energy.

16
Q

What are the advantages of wave energy? (2)

A

No pollution and free fuel.

17
Q

What are the disadvantages of wave energy? (3)

A

Noisy, unreliable and alters habitats.

18
Q

How does solar energy work?

A

Solar radiation hits solar panel and generates electrical energy.

19
Q

What is the advantage of solar energy?

A

No pollution.

20
Q

What are the disadvantages of solar energy? (2)

A

Unreliable and expensive.

21
Q

How does tidal energy work?

A

The kinetic energy of the moving tide turns a underwater turbine turning a generator creating electrical energy.

22
Q

What are the advantages of tidal energy? (2)

A

Very reliable and no pollution.

23
Q

What are the disadvantages of tidal energy? (4)

A

Tides effect output, destroys ecosystems, causes trouble for shipping and expensive.

24
Q

What is Biomass?

A

When organisms are burnt they produce energy.

25
What is the disadvantage of biomass?
Large areas needed to grow crops.
26
What is nucelar power?
Like a fossil fuel power station, uranium is used to power the water but it doesn't burn.
27
What are the advantages of nuclear power? (2)
Very reliable and no pollution.
28
What are the disadvantages of nuclear power? (2)
Expensive radioactive waste and non-renewable.
29
Coal... (2)
Burning produces greenhouse gases CO2 and SO2 contributing to acid rain. Reliable.
30
Oil... (4)
Burning produces greenhouse gases CO2 and SO2 contributing to acid rain. Spilling causes environmental damage. Reliable. Compact source of energy for transport.
31
Gas... (2)
Burning produces greenhouse gases CO2 but not SO2. Reliable.
