What is a renewable energy source?
A resource which is replenished as it is used.
What is a non-renewable energy source?
A resource which will eventually run out.
What are the steps of a coal power station?
1. Furnace
2. Boiler
3. Turbine
4. Generator
- Coal is burnt (chemical –> heat)
- Water is turned into steam (heat –> kinetic)
- Steam turns the blades of the turbine (kinetic)
- A coil placed inside a magnetic field turns and produces an electric field (kinetic –> electrical)
How does wind power work?
The kinetic store of the wind causes the turbines to spin and gain kinetic energy, turning a generator creating electrical energy.
What are the advantages of wind power? (2)
The fuel is free and no CO2 is given out.
What are the disadvantages of wind power? (3)
Unreliable as it is not always windy, noisy, dangerous to birds.
How does geothermal energy work?
Cool water is pumped into the ground where there are hot rocks so the thermal store of the water increases and steam rises to turn a turbine and a generator creating electrical energy.
What is the advantage of geothermal energy?
No pollution.
What are the disadvantages of geothermal energy? (2)
`Expensive and hard to find area where hot rocks are close to the surface.
How does hydroelectric energy work?
The water stored high up in a dam has a store of gravitational energy and as it is released it turns the blades of a turbine (kinetic) then a generator creating electrical energy.
What are the advantages of hydroelectric energy? (3)
Cheap after construction, no pollution and constant energy.
What are the disadvantages of hydroelectric energy? (2)
Expensive construction and floods large areas destroying ecosystems/ displacing residents.
What is wave energy?
Kinetic energy of the waves turns a turbine and generator creating electrical energy.
What are the advantages of wave energy? (2)
No pollution and free fuel.
What are the disadvantages of wave energy? (3)
Noisy, unreliable and alters habitats.
How does solar energy work?
Solar radiation hits solar panel and generates electrical energy.
What is the advantage of solar energy?
No pollution.
What are the disadvantages of solar energy? (2)
Unreliable and expensive.
How does tidal energy work?
The kinetic energy of the moving tide turns a underwater turbine turning a generator creating electrical energy.
What are the advantages of tidal energy? (2)
Very reliable and no pollution.
What are the disadvantages of tidal energy? (4)
Tides effect output, destroys ecosystems, causes trouble for shipping and expensive.
What is Biomass?
When organisms are burnt they produce energy.
