Energy, Territory And Energy Dependance - Robert Flashcards
What do countries with a surplus of energy do? What happens if they no longer have a surplus?
Some countries can meet their own needs and sell a surplus to countries that are energy dependent. Without this surplus, these countries wouldn’t have enough energy.
What is the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources?
Non-renewable source are not recreated naturally. They will eventually run out. Renewable resources reform naturally and in sufficient quantities considering the rate at which we use the. If we respect the rate at which they rejuvenate, they will not be depleted.
What are fossil fuels? What’s the difference between oil and natural gas?
Fossil fuels are a type of non-renewable energy. Oil is formed when plants and marine organisms were transformed into mineral matter through the process of pressure and the passing of millions of years. Natural gas comes from the same process except even deeper underground turning it into a gas.
What does it mean if a country has an energy deficit? Who do these countries rely on?
Countries with an energy deficit do not produce enough oil to satisfy their needs. They depend on other counties that have a high supply of energy.
Why is energy the object if international trade?
It is the object of international trade because some countries wouldn’t survive without. The whole world depends on energy to live.
Why type of country needs more energy? Why does the United States consume so much energy? What type of energy do they still rely on?
The more industrialized countries require more energy. The United States needs a lot of energy because they have many industries powered by fossil fuels.
What energy source travels the most and how? What is the issue with these means of transportation?
Oil is the energy source that travels the most. To travels by boat and through pipelines which can result in potential spillage which damages the environment.
How can natural gas be transported?
Natural gas must be liquified in order to travel by tanker
What do high voltage transmission lines do and what’s the issue with them?
High voltage transmission lines can transport electricity however they cannot travel overseas
What is required in order to develop an energy resource?
Heavy equipment and planning is required to develop an energy
What are the phases of petroleum development?
1) Extracted: pumpkin, drilling and extracting
2) Transported: pipeline or tanker
3) Processed: conforter or processed into products which causes major damage to the environment
What are the phases of hydroelectric territories?
1) Generated: reservoirs are built to hold water, huge quantities of water activate the turbines inside the dam. It can lead to the relocation of populations and the destruction of ecosystems.
2) Transported:requires powerlines. Territory must be cleared and access roads must be built
What are the major themes of political debates?
1) The depletion of fossil fuels: when will oil reserves be fully depleted
2) The environment: burning fossil fuels contributed great,y to air pollution and climate change
What are greenhouse gases and how do they affect our environment?
Greenhouse gases are gases that form a screen that prevents the suns heat from escaping after it hits the Earth’s surface
