Energy Terminology Flashcards
Non-renewable energy sources
energy resources that exist in limited quantities on Earth and cannot be replenished once depleted.
Examples of non-renewable energy sources
Fossil fuels - coal, petroleum (oil) and natural gas
uranium, plutonium - the main resource for producing nuclear energy.
Sustainability
Development which meets present needs without compromising the ability to meet the needs of the future
Renewable energy sources
either have unlimited availability or can be replenished relatively quickly.
Examples of renewable energy sources
Solar energy
wind energy
HEP
Geothermal energy
Biomass
Tidal energy
Wave energy
Energy vulnerability
The inability of many households to access affordable energy services, and the lack of adequate social safety nets to support low-income groups
Energy security
Reliable availability of affordable energy, whilst ensuring that energy systems are resilient to disruptions
Non Critical (renewable)
Renewable energy resources have unlimited availability. They are ‘everlasting’ and we do not need to worry about the rate at which they are used
Examples of Non Critical (renewable)
Solar power, tidal power, wave power
Critical (renewable)
Renewable energy resources require careful management as they can be used up at a faster rate than they are being replaced
Examples of Critical (renewable)
energy produced from wood, biomass and animal wastes can be used up faster than replaced
