Energy Systems In Muscle Cells Flashcards
What is the purpose of Creatine Phosophate (CP)?
Breaks down to release energy and phosphate which are used to convert ADP into ATP at a fast rate, and therefore helps support strenuous exercise in muscle cells.
How long does it take for the creatine phosphate supply in muscle cells to run out?
A very short amount of time/10 seconds.
Levels of creatine phosphate are restored when energy demand on muscles are low.
What happens if there is an absence of oxygen during respiration?
Pyruvate is concerted into lactic acid.
What happens if there is a build up of lactic acid in muscle cells?
Lactic acid can build up in muscle cells when oxygen is in short supply during strenuous exercise.
Lactic acid build-up in muscle cells can cause muscle fatigue and an oxygen debt.
How may oxygen debt be repaid?
In a recovery period following strenuous exercise, during which time lactic acid is broken down.
What contracts to bring about the movements of strenuous exercise?
Skeletal muscle.
What are the two types of fibres found in skeletal muscle?
Slow-twitch (type 1) fibres and fast-twitch fibres.
What are the characteristics of slow-twitch fibres?
They contract more slowly but can sustain contractions for longer and are effective for endurance activities.
What are the characteristics of fast-twitch fibres?
They contract more quickly over short periods and are effective for short bursts of strenuous activity.
