Energy systems Flashcards
3 advantages and disadvantages of the aerobic system
+Large yield of 38 ATP
+Lasts forever because fuels replenish
+No fatiguing by-products
-complex reaction which takes time
-delay for 02 delivery
-requires 02
What is glycolotic system
Glucose is broken down into two molecules of Pyruvic acid. During higher intensity excercise, no oxygen is present to break down glucose, meaning lactate dehydrogenase acts on pyruvic acid causing the by-product of lactif acid.
Duration and intensity of glycolotic system
Glycolotic system lasts for around 3 mins of high intensity exercise before the performer fatigues. Glycolotic system is predominant in a 800m race
Aerobic system
When intensity is low to medium, the body can resynthesise ATP to the muscles using aerobic system
Krebs cycle Stage 1
Acetyl Coa is produced by the breakdown of glucoseand combines with oxaloacetric acid to form citric acid.
Krebs cycle stage 2
Citric acid is oxidised through a cycle of reactions where carbon dioxide is released as a bi-product as well as enough energy for the resynthesis of 2ATP.this occurs in the matrix of mitochondria.
Krebs cycle stage 3
Hydrogen atoms are removed from the compound in stages and are transported to the Cristae of mitochondria by NAD and FAD
Electron transport chain
Hydrogen atoms are carried along the cristae of mitochondria and are split into ions and electrons which is then oxidised and released as h2o
NAD and FAD
Pairs of hydrogen ions carried by NAD release enough energy to reysynthesise
