Energy Stores And Transfers Flashcards
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work and it is measured in joules.
What does the principle of conservation of energy state?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred from one store to another.
What type of energy do all moving things have?
Kinetic energy.
Kinetic energy increases with which two factors?
- Mass
- Speed.
What is Gravitational Potential Energy?
An object has this energy when it is above the ground due to the pull of gravity.
What happens to Gravitational Potential Energy if an object falls?
Energy can be transferred.
Where is Chemical energy stored?
In chemical bonds.
Provide examples of stores of Chemical energy.
- Petrol
- Batteries
- Food.
What is Elastic Potential energy?
Energy stored in stretched or compressed springs or elastic bands that can return to their original shape.
What is Magnetic Potential energy?
Energy in two magnets that either attract or repel each other due to the magnetic field created by some magnetised materials.
What is Electrostatic Potential energy?
Energy that occurs when two charged objects can attract or repel each other.
What is Nuclear energy?
Energy found when radioactive substances decay, nuclei are split or join together.
What is Thermal energy?
Energy contained in hot objects.
Name the 4 energy transfers
- by heating
- electrically
- radiation ( sound or light waves)
- mechanically ( using a force)
