Energy stores and transfers Flashcards
What is a system?
A system is a n object or group of objects.
What is a closed system?
A closed system is one where no energy can escape to or enter from the surroundings.
What is kinetic energy?
An energy an object has when it is moving?
What is gravitational potential energy?
Energy an object has because of its height above the ground.
What is elastic potential energy?
Energy an elastic object has when it is stretched or compressed.
What is thermal energy?
Energy an object has because of its temperature.
What is chemical energy?
Energy that can be transferred by chemical reactions involving foods, fuels, and the chemicals in batteries.
What is nuclear energy?
Energy stored in the nucles of an atom.
What is magnetic energy?
Energy a ,agnetic object has when near another charged object.
What is electrostatic energy?
Energy a charged object has when neear another charged object.
What is Heating?
Energy is transferred from one object to another object with a lower temperature.
How do waves transfer energy?
Waves can transfer energy by radiation.
How does electricity transfer energy?
When an electrical current flows it can transfer energy.
How do forces transfer energy?
Energy is transferred when a force moves or changed the shape of an object.
What is an example of an energy transfer?
When you stretch a rubber band, energy from your chemical store is mechanically transferred to the rubber band’s elastic potential store.
