Energy Stores Flashcards
What is energy?
A quantity that is conserved - it cannot be created or destroyed but it can be stored and transferred.
What are some examples of energy stores?
Kinetic, gravitational, chemical, thermal and elastic.
What is an example of kinetic energy store?
A runner has more energy in their kinetic energy store when they are running faster.
What is an example of a gravitational energy store?
A box has more energy in its gravitational store when it is placed on a higher shelf.
What is an example of a thermal energy store?
An object has more energy in its thermal energy store when it is hot than when it is cold.
What is an example of a chemical energy store?
Batteries, foods and fuels store energy in their chemical energy stores.
What is an example of elastic potential energy?
A stretched or squashed object has more energy in its elastic energy store.
How can energy be transferred?
Mechanical working, electrical working, heating and radiation.
What is an example of mechanical work?
A force is applied to move an object: when a person lifts a book onto a high shelf.
What is an example of electrical work?
Charges flow in a circuit: in a battery powered toy train.
What is an example of heating?
Energy moves from the thermal store of a hotter object to the thermal store of a cooler object: a handwarmer used to warm up your hands.
What is an example of radiation?
Energy is transferred as wave: infrared radiation from a toaster to a slice of bread.
What is the unit of energy?
Joules (J)
The energy in which store increases as a car moves faster?
Kinetic energy.
The energy in which store decreases as a candle burns?
Chemical energy store.
