Energy Sources Flashcards
1
Q
Biomass energy
A
- Renewable energy source
- Made from plant waste, human waste, animal waste and scrap wood
- Converted to heat energy through burning
2
Q
Solar energy
A
- Renewable energy source
- Radiates from the Sun and produces energy
- Can be made into heat, electricity, and power
3
Q
Fossil Fuels
A
- Releases Carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, affecting global warming
- Non-renewable energy source
- Oil,natural gas, and coal are examples of Fossil Fuels
4
Q
Geothermal Energy
A
- Renewable energy source
- Geothermal power plants use heat from deep inside the Earth to generate steam to make electricity
- Geothermal heat pumps tap into heat close to the Earth’s surface to heat water or to provide heat for buildings
5
Q
Wind energy
A
- Renewable energy source
- Wind turbines convert kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power
- Mechanical power can be used for specific tasks or a generator can convert it into electricity
6
Q
Nuclear fuels (uranium and plutonium)
A
- Non-Renewable energy source
- They’re aren’t burnt to release energy, they are involved in nuclear reactions with a nuclear reactor, resulting in heat being released
- They’re radioactive metals
7
Q
Wave energy
A
- Renewable energy source
- Water on the sea rises and falls because of waves on the surface
- Wave machines use the kinetic energy in this movement to drive electricity generators
8
Q
Hydroelectric energy
A
- Renewable energy source
- Flowing water creates energy that can be captured and turned into electricity
- A common type of hydroelectric power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir, then water released from it flows through a turbine, spinning it, which creates a generator to produce electricity
9
Q
Tidal energy
A
- Renewable energy source
- Form of hydropower that converts the energy of tides into useful forms of power, mainly electricity
- Cheap energy source, with a low cost of generating electricity
