Energy sources Flashcards
What can be done domestically and nationally to reduce energy demands?
Using shared/public transport over singular cars, cycling/walking rather than transport, turning off lights when not needed, not using too much hot water, consuming less meat
What does the choice for which energy source to use depend on?
Environmental impacts,
Economics,
Waste produced,
Carbon dioxide emissions
What are the advantages and disadvantages of fossil fuels?
They are widely and easily available, they are stable and efficient sources and they are cheap and easy to use.
However they are unsustainable, they produce harmful waste products: carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) and sulfur dioxide (causes acid rain)
What are the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear fuels?
They have low greenhouse emissions, they are powerful and efficient, nuclear fuel is cheap for the energy it produces and long lasting.
However it is also non-renewable and unsustainable, waste products are radioactive and remain hazadous for thousands of years
What are some examples of renewable energy sources?
Biofuel energy, solar energy, wind energy, water (waves, tidal, hydroelectricity ) energy, geothermal
What are the advantages of energy sources such as solar, wind and water energy?
They are renewable sources so they wont run out or leave future generations without sources, they also do not produce polluting gases and emissions
To ensure we have enough energy to supply the whole nation what do we need in terms of energy sources?
A variety and mixture of sources that all contribute to supplying the entire nation.
