Energy sources Flashcards
What is primary energy source?
It has not been converted before use by a consumer
What is secondary energy source?
It results from a primary source
What are the examples of Primary source
Wind and fossil fuels
What are the examples of Secondary source
Electricity and hydrogen
Primary sourcezs are classified into two groups called?
Renewable and Non-renewable
What is the definition of Renewable energy?
It’s replaced in a short time or it’s being continually generated
What is the definition of Non-renewable energy?
It’s replaced over a very very long time
What are examples of renewable energy?
Sun, water, wind, biomass, geothermal
What are examples of non-renewable energy?
fossil fuels, nuclear fuel
How can we classify a source of energy into renewable or non-renewable?
It depends on the rate at which it is used and formed. If these two rates are comparable, it’s renewable, but if the rate at which it’s used is faster compared to generation, then it’s non-renewable.
What is the advantage of using biomass compared to fossil fuels?
The time taken to release CO2 into the atmosphere is comparable to the time taken to trap the CO2 in photosynthesis for a biomass source of energy. However, for fossil fuel, it takes a short amount of time to release CO2, but 100s and 1000 millions of years to trap CO2. So the amount of released CO2 due to using fossil fuel is more compared to biomass.
Define Thermal power station
In each thermal power station, a primary source of energy is used to heat up water, then it’s converted into stem with high pressure and temperature to turn blades of the turbine, and at last electricity in the generator is created.
What is the diagram of the thermal power station like?
Primary -> Secondary
Internal (thermal heat) (Result of using primary source) -> Heat up water -> stem -> Turn blade of turbine -> electricity
Define Sanky Diagram + Formula of effieciency
Different thermal power stations have different efficiency to measure how efficient a thermal power station works. We use the Sankey diagram as it’s a common visualization of flow of energy.
E= out/in x 100%
Point about the source of energy used
The source of energy which is used at the highest level in the world is liquid fossil fuel like petrol and oil.
The one which is used at the least level is nuclear field.
