Energy security is a key goal for countries, with most relying on fossil fuels. Flashcards
Energy security -
Refers to the availability of energy resources at affordable price.
The consumption of energy depends on several factors -
Physical availability, technology, cost and economic development.
Energy consumption varies because of Physical availability -
Are they available within a country or do they have to be transported, if no then the likely costs are going to be higher towards the consumer.
Energy consumption varies because of technology -
Modern tech can help exploit energy resources, for example deposits of oil and gas require deep drilling through contorted geology, technology can help make some energy resources easily accessible.
Energy pathways -
Meeting the demand for energy involves energy pathways from producer to consumer.
Energy pathways (literally means pathway) -
The route taken by any form of energy from its source to its point of consumption.
Energy portraits between France and USA why?
Total consumption of energy of France compared to USA shows that France only consume 1/10 of what USA consumes. This is maybe due to supply and demand for example the compared populations of France at around 65 mill and USA at around 320 mill. Climate may also show difference and suggest why a colder climate needs energy.
What does the energy mix between USA and France show?
50% of energy in France comes from fossil fuels and 10% from renewables.
France relies on Nuclear reactors and have over 50 and 46% of energy is imported
Energy players?
TNC’s and OPEC
TNC as a major energy player -
E.G Shell or Gazprom, these are much under governmental control so are not necessarily TNC’s.
OPEC as major energy players -
12 member countries and between them own around 2/3 of the world’s oil reserves in a position to control the amount of gas entering the global market but have been accused of holding back energy in order to pump up prices.
