2
Q

Acid mine drainage before and after mining

A

Metal sulfides are stably bound in minerals when they are underground Metals are exposed to the air and they become mobile
Oxidise from sulfides to sulfates

Q

Consequences of Acid Mine Drainage

A

Sulfuric acid is created as a result
Can oxidise other metal sulfides and/or leach further metals from the surrounding rocks
The acidic waters pick up these dissolved metals and transport them into the nearby rivers

Q

What are the effects of acid mine drainage

A

The acid waste reduce water pH to below biologically viable limits below 4
At pH values of between 4 and 7, the ferric ions produced in these reactions will tend to precipitate out

Q

Treatments of AMD

A

Active - plantation, 3 stages, sedimentation

Passive - Use of plants to encourage minerals to precipitate out of solution

7
Q

Heavy metal solubility

A

More soluble at low pH

High pH means insoluable so will not disperse by water

16
Q

What forms are mercury found in

A

Liquid, inorganic and organic

17
Q

Liquid mercury

A

Less toxic than methylmercury
Vapours can be inhaled ovr a long period of time
Absorbed slowly so may not cause damage

18
Q

Inorganic mercury

A

Absorbed through gut and skin

Cannot pass throug the cell membrane of the brain

19
Q

Organic mercury

A

Methylmercury is most toxic
Affects immune system
Deadly
