Energy Resources Flashcards
Gone when they are used up
Non-renewable
Energy resources come in what two forms?
Nonrenewable and renewable
What are three types of fossil fuels?
Coal, oil, and natural gas.
Coal
Formed from plant remains and must be mined from the ground.
Oil
Liquid fossil fuel and form from small animals alge and other small organisms that lived in the sea millions of years ago
Natural gas
Mixture of methane and other gases and forms from some of the same organisms as oil
Renewable resources
Constantly being supplied
Types of renewable resources
Solar energy biomass fuels geothermal energy hydrogen power
Nuclear power plants
Another source of power comes from splitting the nucleus of an atom about 20% of the US and more than 70% of France’s Energy comes from this source
What is the problem with using solar energy
Figuring out how to use this power
What is the problem with biomass fuels
Takes time to regrow trees that have been cut down in producing alcohol and methane in large quantities is expensive
What is the problem with geothermal energy
Only a few places have magma close enough to earth surface deep drilling is expensive
What is the problem with hydrogen power
Mostly combined with oxygen and water on Earth it takes more energy to obtain the hydrogen then is produced by burning it
What is the problem with nuclear power plants
Overheating can cause explosions and radioactive materials can escape into the environment
What are two ways to preserve our current energy resources
Increase the efficiency of our energy use and reduce energy use
