Energy Resources Flashcards
What are the main energy resources available for use on earth?
Fossil fuels
Nuclear energy
Renewable sources
Define renewable energy
An energy source that will never run out e.g. wind and water
What uses do we have for energy resources?
Transport
Electricity
Heating
Generation
Describe the main energy resources available
Nuclear energy - turns heat energy into kinetic energy in nuclear power stations
Fossil energy - energy sources formed from the remains of living organisms ( coal, gas and oil )
Geothermal energy - hot water and steam from deep underground can be used to drive turbines
Examples of renewable energy sources
Wind
Solar
Tidal
Hydroelectric
Examples of non renewable energy sources
Fossil fuels e.g. coal oil and gas
Why are some energy sources not reliable
Sunny and/or windy weather can’t be guaranteed
Not enough for the increased demand
Environmental impact of different energy sources
Wind - sound and visual impact
Solar - associated with pollution
Fossil fuels - carbon emissions
Explain patterns and trends in the use of energy resources
Electricity use increased as the population increased
The use of renewable energy sources has increased
Environmental issues form use of energy resources
air pollution
climate change
water pollution
thermal pollution
solid waste disposal
