What is Arousal?
The general physiological and psychological activation of the body
What is the definition of anxiety
A negative emotional state characterized by nervousness and worry
What is trait anxiety?
A feature of your personality to perceive situations as threatning
What is state anxiety?
Anxiety experienced at a particular moment (right now)
What is somatic anxiety?
Physical anxiety (tight muscles, breathing)
What is cognitive anxiety?
Mental anxiety (thinking, self thoughts)
How do you measure Trait Anxiety?
SCAT (sport competition anxiety test)
How do you measure State Anxiety?
CSAI-2 (asked questions right before the game), and ARS (only 2 questions but use a scale of how you feel)
How do you measure Arousal Anxiety?
Use a mental checklist to see behaviors
What are some things that occur when your flight or fight response kicks in?
Heart Rate Increases, Breathing (short and rapid), Sweating Increases, Adrenaline, Urge to Pee
Explain the Drive Theory
Drive x Habit = Performance
Skilled performer: can perform well with high anxiety
Beginner athlete: can’t perform well with high anxiety
Explain the Inverted U Theory
Can be applied to many examples
By Task: Fine Motor (to be calm and not stress), Gross Motor (needs to be hyped up)
By Skill Level: Beginner (needs to be calm), Advanced (can be pushed to perform better)
Explain the IZOF Theory
Having a specific zone were the athlete needs to be, can be determined by the situation
Explain the Catastrophe Model
Cognitive Anxiety is KEY
Low CA: similar to inverse U theory
High CA: can only reach a certain point and has to start all over if reached past their breaking point
Explain the Reversal Theory
How athletes view a situation (state of mind)
Facilitative (Helps) -> Low Anxiety
Duplicative (Hurts) -> High Anxiety
