Energy In Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is Acid?
A corrosive substance with a pH lower than 7
What is Alkali?
A base with a pH higher than 7
What is an Atom?
The smallest particle of an element
What is a base?
A substance that reacts with an acid to neutralise it and produce a salt.
What is a compound?
A substance containing two or more atoms.
What is a corrosive substance able to damage?
Metal, skin, stonework and clothes
What is an element?
A substance made of one atom
What is an exothermic reaction?
It’s where energy is received out to the surroundings
What happens to the temperature in a exothermic reaction?
Increases
What is an indicator?
A substance that it’s colour changes based on the pH of the solution it is in.
What colour does Litmus paper turn in acids?
Red
What colour does Litmus paper turn in alkalis?
Blue
What is Neutralisation?
A reaction between an acid and base to create a salt plus water.
What is the pH?
The scale of acidity or alkalinity a substance is.
What is thermal decomposition?
A reaction where some compounds break down when heated, forming two or more products from one reactant.
