Energy & Heat transfer Vocabulary Flashcards
Law of Conservation of energy
energy can not be created or destroyed just transformed ( under normal conditions).
Heat
Thermal energy that flows due to a difference in temperature. Heat flows from hot to cold.
Heat Transfer
A method by which heat flows (conduction, convection, radiation)
Conduction
Heat transfer within or between solid objects
Convection
Heat transfer into or out of fluids.
Radiation
Heat transfer due to packets of energy called photons that can travel through many substances, even empty space.
insulator
A material through which energy ( electrical, thermal or sound) cannot be easily transferred.
Conductor
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal or sound) can be easily transferred.
Temperature
The measure of the average speed of all particles.
Thermal energy
The total energy of all particles in an object.
Cell Membrane
The membrane that protects the cell
Lysosome
Breaks down worn-out or damaged organelles, waste materials, and foreign invaders.
Ribosomes
Makes protein
Rough ER
Synthesizes and packages protein, and transport materials through the cell.
Smooth ER
In synthesizes lipids that will be exported by the cell; detoxifies poisons, alcohol, and drugs
