Energy glossary Flashcards
What is biomass?
The dry mass of energy in an organism.
What is a Chemical store?
Energy that is stored in food, batteries or fuels.
What is a conduction?
The movement of heat through solids.
What is convection?
The movement of heat through liquids and gases.
What is dissipation? (dissipated).
Energy that spreads out into the environment.
What is elastic core?
Energy that is stored when an object has changed
shape - for example, a spring or elastic band.
What does it mean to emit?
To release or give out.
What are different types of energy and what is its unit?
There are many different types of energy - for example, heat and light. The unit of energy is the joule (J).
What are fossil fuels?
Coal, oil and gas – these were formed from dead
animal and plants over millions of years.
What is a gravitational potentional?
This type of energy is possesed by anything which can fall.
What is infared radiation?
Radiational gived off by the sun.
What is a joule?
The unit of energy; the symbol for it is J.
What is the symbol of a kilojoule and what does it mean?
The symbol is KJ 1000J=1KJ.
What is the symbol of kilowatts and what does it mean?
The symbol is KW 1 KW= 1000W.
What is kinetic energy and what does it mean?
This type of energy relates to anything that is moving.
What is nuclear energy?
This type of energy is released from nuclear reactions.
What is radiation?
The transfer of heat as a wave. Heat radiation is affected by surface, colour and texture.
What does it mean for something to be renewable?
Energy sources that will not run out - for example, solar or tidal energy.
What is temperature?
How hot or cold something is, measured in Celcius .
What is a thermometer?
A device that can be used to measure temperature.
