Energy Generation and Storage Flashcards
What are fossil fuels?
Natural resources that form underground over millions of years
What are the 3 main types of fossil fuels?
coal, oil and gas
How do fossil fuels typically provide energy?
They are heated under water to create steam
How is steam used to generate electricity?
It drives a turbine which turns a generator, generating energy
What are the advantages of using fossil fuels?
There is a large supply meaning they are reliable. They are also cost-effective.
What are the disadvantages of using fossil fuels?
They are finite so will run out, extraction has social and environmental impacts, they release greenhouse gases when burned.
What are the advantages of nuclear power?
Low levels of greenhouse gases are produced, it is very efficient, as well as being cheap and reliable
What are the disadvantages of nuclear power?
Nuclear power plants are expensive and decommission, disposal of waste is dangerous and difficult and nuclear power plants are risky.
How is nuclear power generated?
Through the nuclear fission of uranium nuclei
Name 5 renewable energy sources
wind, solar, hydroelectric, tidal and biomass
How is wind power generated?
By placing wind turbines in exposed places
How is solar power generated?
Through solar cells which generate energy from sunlight
How is tidal power generated?
Through dams across rivers containing turbines
How is hydro-electric power generated?
By building a dam to flood a valley and allowing water to flow through turbines
How is biomass energy generated?
Waste food and or wood is burned and used to create steam
